Frequently Asked Questions

To become an approved driving instructor In Northampton and across the UK you need the following:

  • For at least 3 and a half years out of the last 6 years you need to have held a full uk or EU driving license
  • To be able to read a standard number plate from 90 feet away, you can use glasses if they are required
  • To have less than 6 points on your current license
  • To have no convictions on record in the 10 years that would prevent you from being allowed on the Driving Instructors Register
  • To enjoy working with people and being in social settings

It can take anywhere from 3 months to a year to become a fully qualified driving instructor, depending on your work and family commitments. For most people it takes around 9-12 months.

There are 3 exams you will need to complete to become a qualified ADI:

  • Part 1 – Theory Test (100 questions and a 14 clip hazard perception test)
  • Part 2 – Advanced Driving Test (Advanced one hour driving test)
  • Part 3 – Teaching Ability Test (An observed in-car driving lesson)

The fastest way to start your new career as a driving instructor is to enroll in an intensive learning course, allowing you to pass your part 1 and part 2 tests as soon as possible and then taking your 40 hours of part 3 training. After this you can then start giving paid instruction on a trainee licence issued by the DVSA. You must independently apply for your trainee license.

The majority of driving instructors in the UK are self employed either working solely for themselves, or under a franchise. There are a small amount of driving instructors that are employed by driving schools but they are the minority.
