Frequently Asked Questions

To become an approved driving instructor In Wellingborough and across the UK you need the following:

  • To have held a full UK or EU license for 3 and a half years out of the last 6 years
  • To be confident in being able to read a normal sized number plate from 90 feet away (using glasses if you need too)
  • To have less than 6 points on your current license
  • To have no convictions on record that are unspent in the 10 years that would prevent you from being allowed on the Driving Instructors Register
  • To enjoy meeting lots of different people and being patient whilst helping them reach their goals

It usually takes anywhere from 3 months to one year to become a fully qualified ADI, depending on your schedule and other commitments. For most people it takes around 9-12 months.

There are 3 exams you will need to pass to become a qualified ADI in the UK:

  • 1 – Theory Test (100 questions and a 14 clip hazard perception test)
  • 2 – Advanced Driving Test (Advanced one hour driving test)
  • 3 – Teaching Ability Test (An observed in-car driving lesson)

This can vary as to how many hours you want to work, but a driving instructor working full time delivering 35 hours of driving lessons per week taking four weeks off a year as holiday should earn around £32,000 per annum after costs.

It’s important to find the right instructor training course for you, one that can fit around your current commitments and lifestyle. Not all ADI training courses are the same, so research before you commit to a course. Once you have booked your course you should be supported through the process by your training provider, but here is a quick breakdown of the process:

  • Apply for a DBS Check
  • Once received, apply to the DVSA register, you must do both of these before you are able to book any further tests
  • Take the ADI Part 1 Theory Test
  • Take an ADI Part 2 Advanced Driving Test
  • Take up a six months trainee license (this is optional)
  • Take an ADI Part 3 Teaching Ability Test

Most UK driving instructors are self employed, either working solely for themselves or under a franchise driving school. There are a small amount of driving instructors who are employed by the driving schools they work under, but they are the minority.
